MLM Lessons from Bird Hunting

Some of you may know that I went on vacation last week to go bird hunting in Maine with my dad. We had a great time and it was nice to be in the outdoors.

I wanted to take a moment or two and share a few lessons from bird hunting that apply to network marketing.

First off, if you want to go hunting, you need to go through hunter's safety training and get your license. These are the basic requirements to become a legal hunter. In network marketing, this compares to signing up with the company and going through your getting started training.

Next, you need to practice shooting so you develop a good shot group. In network marketing, this is compared to developing and refining your basic skills such as inviting, prospecting, following-up and closing, so you know what you are doing.

Next, you have to decide what type of bird you are hunting. The type of bird you want to hunt will dictate WHERE you go hunting. This can be compared to knowing what type of prospect you are looking for: your target market. 

Furthermore, you need to figure out where the birds are. You want to go to their environment. Birds move around a lot, so you will need to recon the area. This is the same thing you do in network marketing. Once you figure out who you are trying to recruit, you need to advertise (or visit) places they hang out.

Next, when you are hunting birds, you can increase your chances of success with a good bird dog. Without the right tools and accessories, you will miss out on plenty of birds. This is similar to using third-party tools when you grow your business. Tools allow you to work smart and leverage yourself. 

Finally, you have to put in the time. You have to walk through the woods and drive down the old dirt roads to find your birds. The more you go hunting, the higher the likelihood you will shoot birds. In network marketing, this is the same as getting in the trenches, talking to people, getting rejected, showing presentations, etc.
