Learning The Hard Way

As humans, our minds were built to make mistakes, learn and become better. Surprisingly, there is a special part of our brains that controls our habit creation, storage and then selection, if we look at habits as programs in our brains. Then there is a sharpening of the neural pathways.

Deep in the centre of the brain is the basal ganglia. Boundless.com describes as follows; The basal ganglia are responsible for voluntary motor control, procedural learning, and eye movement, as well as cognitive and emotional functions.

When learning a new task/ skill, all activated senses gather information on the basis of our survival. There is a spike at the beginning of this first time event and the amplitude of that activity is some what maintained throughout the experience. Then at coompletion a greater spike occurs. Over time the level of brain activity spikes at the beginning and end become more pronounced than the brain activity during the mid portion of the process. The brain activity graph mid portion of performing these skills show reduced brain activity due to the fact that the skill is becoming a HABIT. The basal ganglia is working. Hence, procedural learning.

And at each practice the myelin grows between the neurons making the path for information travel sharper. This is how our brains make practice become perfect. And once heard Robert Kiyosaki say that if you are not having success is because you are not failing enough. Well its really the practice that is important. The more you do a task, the sharpening of neural paths coupled with the function of the basal ganglia gives you the chance to automatically perform that task (voluntary motor control). while you perform these tasks by almost automatic sometimes you will get a chance look at new experiences in the event and learn from them. Your brain is naturally making your activities automatic and efficient. Yes, the basal ganglia lets you reduce brain activity for a routine task so that brain power can be directed towards other activities. Guess you are thinking that is how persons multi-task.

So next time when you failing, appreciate the process. The failures will open your eyes. Then let you know what to do next time (lol: as long as there is a next time). There will be a high spike for the expectation of the success at the beginning then the basal ganglia will store the learning making the tasks easier for the high of success at the end. It should be our aim as entrepreneurs to focus on our positive habits that will make us successful. Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit shows many examples of this plus a break down of how our brains function with the habits we live by.

We learn by practice and alot of failures in these practice sessions. Its also important to note that failures should be from calculated risk analysis. As long as an attempt is assesed to not kill you its good to learn from. Then ensure you reward the success. The reward seals the habit loop. SEAL the good HABITS and IMPROVE.
