The Secret Of The Financially Successful

All my life I believed I have to be realistic. As someone who comes from a typical working family, I knew that we citizens should strive to obtain the best education we can, get a good job and work hard to be successful. And from my school education I knew that we should also strive to serve our society the best we can and to give back. If everyone adopts this kind of thinking, our country and our life will be much better, much more fair. More equality means more justice, and more justice means more satisfaction and thus happiness. Right?

I don't know. Because as I was growing up and as grown up things started to happen, like dealing with different kinds of people who in one way or another had authority over certain aspects of my life, I kept learning that there are very many variables that can impact my life. Maybe if we all had the same start in our life, then the chances would be bigger for everyone to become successful and happy. But we don't all start from the same position in society. And some people are more driven than others and have different levels of commitment. So throughout my life, still trying to be reasonable and realistic, I learned to compromise, to let go of some of my dreams for the sake of... I don't know what. Because as years pass by and life goes on, some friendships dissolve and other ones are born, families are formed, priorities change... and it's all understandable, but I couldn't help to think that there is very little left in my life of the things I used to care about. So I started questioning my own beliefs in an attempt to find out what it is that I care about now. And the more I thought about it, the more I understood that all that stuff I was taught to believe about life - which things are important and which are not, which things are realistic and which are not - they were all someone else's ideals or expectations or just opinions and they were all subjective. With the world changing, some of those opinions and ideals change too.

So now, when I look back, it seems like I was trying to live my life by living it the way others wanted me to do it. The infrastructure, the system, is there, so to various extents individuals can access it and hopefully in the end benefit from it. The reality is, most people don’t succeed in their professional life, many are unhappy and many have to resort to different methods and activities to feel some amount of satisfaction, even if it’s only temporary. On a scale of the world’s population, only small number honestly say that they are happy.

But what’s more important, in all this analysis I learned that being realistic didn’t do me much favour. I realized that the word itself – realistic – can mean something completely different for different people. For example, what is realistic for a wealthy person is not realistic for the poor. And often it is so not because the poor person is less intelligent or less capable. There could be many reasons, like no access to opportunities or lack of contact with influential people or those with executive powers. To these people other outcomes can be realistic. Once I understood this, I knew that me being realistic was actually self-limiting. My realistic thinking likely limited my actions and outcomes. Who knows where and what I would be today if I was being unrealistic. What would my life be like if I believed I can achieve bigger things and took action to achieve them? Even if I was successful in achieving only one of those “unrealistic” goals, my reality could have been different. I found this thinking interesting and I decided to develop a habit of daring myself to be unrealistic. It is not my default way of thinking, thus it requires me to constantly remind myself to dream big, set my goals at a higher level and keep taking actions towards them. I came to believe that with consistent work towards those goals, the dreams will eventually come true. And even if they don’t, the journey itself is much more exciting. Its challenges are the driving force of my personal growth and I look forward to discovering who I can become.
