Why I Don't Bow At The Altar Of Social Media

Hey, how's it going? It's a little bit cloudy out today, but still a great day.

I've been thinking about social media, and sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person, especially marketer that doesn't like it. I really don't. I don't go on social media. I don't use it. Rockit does post some of my stuff. My stuff is posted on YouTube if that counts as social media. Facebook. And another video site. Vimeo.

But I don't go on there to read the feed and all this stuff. I found out probably a couple of years ago that going on Facebook just makes me feel bad. I don't know why. Probably because most of the time you just hear people crabbing about stuff. What they don't like. Then the other half of the time it's how perfect their life is, and how blessed they are that this happened or that happened.

No. It's either complains about things they can't do anything about or political or religious views. Arguing about things that really have no solution. I don't know what it is. This is my view of it, and especially as a marketer. It's weird because it seems like everybody and their brother has to have their private Facebook group, solely for the buyers of their product, where you can go in there and help each other and so on.

It sounds like a great concept, but if you've ever been in those groups, it's BS Because the people in those groups mostly are asking stupid questions. For instance, "How do I do this in my GetResponse autoresponder?

And you're looking at it thinking "You're paying those people X dollars a month for your list service and they have 24/7 support. Why are you asking it in this group? A bunch of other people that probably have about the knowledge you do.

Then you have the people that want to attempt to use the group as their own private promotion thing. Which... it's just in poor taste anyway. It's like setting your sign up in someone else's front yard. It doesn't make any sense. It's crazy. And then you've got the people that poach other distributors or marketers or whatever. They want to actually bring someone over to their side.

It's kind of the same thing I guess, as putting in your own links and everything. It's just a little more subtle. Or the people that... they may be part of the higher-ups in the group, that are there posing as somebody who's worthwhile. But they're really putting out information that is dubious at best.

These are the things that I think of when I think of social media. It all comes down to... Well, what's the way that you're going to market your business. You've got your videos and your blogs and all this.

But the fact is... It is now, (and will be for the future) for people that know how to use it... Email is without question the king of online sales. If you deny this, or you don't want to face it, or you think I'm just completely full of crap. Do a little research on this, it's very easy to find. And you'll discover that what I'm saying is true.

Just think about old school. The reason is, your email list is what your list of customers was. It's the same as when you had regular snail mail and you sent stuff over the US post office.

That list of people used to go to a list broker. You could buy these names and you would mail things out. And they would be much higher in quality because it wasn't free. People would put out tens of thousands of dollars. I'm talking 30, 40 years ago. Lots of money. So they had to be very sure that it would work. Unlike now, where you can put out a test real easy and cheap on email. Which does make it a little more garbagey.

But still. If you are a serious marketer and you mean to provide for your customers, email is the way you want to do it. You do not want to have a group on Facebook and they're constantly bombarded with the boneheads and the crap, and being drawn away from what you've got for them.

So talk to people directly in your email. You can use videos like this or whatever. Just put them in a place where they can be protected from all the junk on social media.

That's my thoughts for today. I hope you're having a great day wherever you are. I'm out.
