I remember a guy I was talking to a many years ago. He was ten years my senior. He was talking to me about the importance of going to college and getting a degree. He had a white collar job downtown in the big city. He went as far as boasting about his certificates he had hanging on his wall in the living room. I politely agreed with him on the importance of an education. I also praised him on all of his accomplishments. Then I said, “Mr. Jones, I applaud you. By the way, I just stopped by to pick up the rent.”
It’s a matter of making a profit or trading your time for a paycheck. When it comes to income, the job world is much more predictable than in the self-employment world. As a salaried employee, you know how much money you will earn in the next year. Of course we are assuming that overtime is not factored into the equation. With such predictability, the typical employee mind set becomes one of earning to spend. Did I hear you say, “Weekends at the mall?” You work hard, get your regular paycheck, and use it to buy stuff you can afford. Hold on a minute, there’s another solution, credit cards. Thanks to credit cards, many of us buy more stuff than we can afford. Here’s the point. If you run your network marketing business with a paycheck mind set, you’re destined for money problems.
As a network marketing entrepreneur, you need to focus on profits. The profit mind set is really simple: Keep your sales high (customers) and your overhead as low as possible. Advertising in the newspapers can be costly. Besides, newspapers are becoming a thing of the past.
There are some things we cannot escape and are beyond our control. One of those things is the ever dreaded tax collector. But the good news is that you have complete control of one important item. Here it is: You have total control over how much you spend. This mind set alone will increase your chances of becoming set for life.
I heard someone say that formal education will make you a living; Self education will make you a fortune. Isn’t that the truth?
Before you start boasting about your certificates and your job, make sure the person you’re talking to doesn’t provide the roof over your head. Ouch!
