Cabin Fever

As the days seem longer and longer during this coronavirus stay-at-home situation, I feel the “cabin fever” more and more and a heightened urgency to connect with others. In one way, it is personal, like a longing to be close to family and friends. In another way, it is a need for human connection with people, even people I don’t know yet.

I have always enjoyed meeting and getting to know new people. Many of my new acquaintances have become good friends, confidants, important influencers, and mentors in my life. I do enjoy the company of good friends, a chat by the fire, a talk over coffee, or a laugh over a fun drink during happy hour. 

Do you have that longing to be connected to others, to be close to family and friends too? I’m sure most of you feel that way and that this stay-at-home situation has been very hard. A

sense of isolation and loneliness has been overwhelming for some. The anxiety and fear around ourselves or someone we love getting sick from the coronavirus can even cause panic attacks for some people. 

Let’s get real...this whole coronavirus global pandemic came as a shock to most of us! I remember I was in Denver at the “Expert Summit”, masterminding with my top mentors and colleagues at the beginning of March, and loving every minute of it. I was enjoying happy hour, leisurely eating dinner and drinking wine with friends, and then relaxing together on the veranda by the open fire. What a life!

Then, the stark reality set in upon coming home from Denver! Staying at home, ordering groceries online to get delivery, going out only if absolutely necessary with a mask on and staying 6 feet away from people. Getting sick and being afraid it may be the coronavirus, having a telehealth appointment with my doctor...reality! Thank God, I am one of the fortunate ones.

Let me tell you why I feel fortunate. Despite some of the new restrictions, my life hasn’t changed much. I was already working from the comfort of my home, running my business from my computer. Many people don’t have the luxury of being able to stay home because they are essential workers: fire personnel, police personnel, nurses, doctors, nurses’ aides, hospital cleaning staff, grocery workers, delivery personnel, post office workers and many more.
