Being Yourself Is Not Easy

I can't help but think of lyrics of Frank Sinatra's hit song, My Way:

I've lived a life that's full

I've traveled each and every highway

But more, much more than this

I did it my way

Yes, at this stage of my life I am reasonably content.  But I must say that being yourself is not easy.

There is constant pressure from every sphere- personal, work, family, friends- to drift away from being yourself.  Depending where you are in life, when you look back the life appears so different altogether.

But as much as possible, I did not believe in chasing happiness but being happy within the circumstances I found myself in.  Being content was a mantra to be happy.  It also meant that realization that at any given time, things could be better or could be worse.

Now that I've come this far, I am not sure that I feel particularly different or fulfilled. Have I really grown into a better or different person, the person I was supposed to be? I have no answer to that question, but I have been myself.  I also know that I would not have any other way.

What do I mean "being yourself" you ask?

In my quest for answers I've found that it is very much possible to just be yourself. Your true self is who you really are when you let go of all the stories, labels, and judgments that you have placed upon yourself. It is who you naturally are without the masks and pretentiousness.  Everything else that we claim to be when we say, "This is who I am!" is only a story.

In essence, during life, most efforts are channeled towards basic survival and safety, such as food, water, shelter and safety.  Then followed by fulfilling feelings emulated from love and affection from our relationships. Followed by having self-esteem for yourself and appreciating others.

Being yourself goes beyond the pursuit of basics in life.  It is realization (as early as possible) that you are work in progress.  Toady's you is transient. Ensuring that you are growing and/or changing on your terms.  Change is good if you are enhancing yourself.

Being yourself is not just one-time goal.  It is never ending.  It is constantly evolving.  It is realizing full potential at various stages in your life.  You are you but you are not set in stone.  You are seeking out in life, your way. Just being yourself.
