Solar’s Next Chapter: Why There’s Still Time (and Why You Shouldn’t Wait)

The solar industry has entered a new era. With the recent passage of the federal bill eliminating the 30% federal solar tax credit at the end of 2025, homeowners across the country are wondering:

Is solar still worth it?

Do I still have time to go solar and save money?

What happens after 2025?

Here’s what you need to know—and why acting sooner rather than later could be the smartest financial decision for your home.

The Tax Credit Countdown Is Real

For years, the federal government has offered a 30% tax credit for homeowners who install solar on their properties. It’s been one of the most powerful incentives to make solar more affordable, helping millions of Americans reduce energy bills and build energy independence.

It was originally slated to last another NINE years. But with the new One Big Beautiful Bill legislation being signed into law, this 30% credit will now completely disappear after 2025. But there’s a crucial detail:

To qualify, your system must be fully installed by December 31, 2025.

This means homeowners don’t just need to sign a contract—they need time for permitting, utility approvals, and installation. As the deadline approaches, demand will spike, and installation slots may fill quickly.

Solar Still Makes Sense—Even Without Incentives

Here’s the good news: solar remains one of the most effective and affordable ways to power your home. Clean energy costs continue to drop, and electricity rates from traditional utilities keep climbing.

Solar technology is more efficient than ever.

Energy storage options are growing.

Homeowners are gaining more control over their energy costs.

While losing the tax credit changes the financial math, solar can still pay for itself through long-term savings and protection from rate hikes. Particularly in the long-term as the industry adapts, energy prices rise and costs of install start to drop. We’re already seeing this dynamic in markets like California where even today, with or without the tax credit solar makes sense for homeowners!

Two Paths Forward: Ownership vs. TPO

Another important update from this legislation is how it affects different ways of going solar. In the future, solar may simply look different, but there will still be a path for many homeowners to be part of the clean energy solution and save money on their increasingly high energy expenses.

Owning your solar system: If you want to own your panels and maximize your home’s long-term value, the time to act is now. Homeowners who choose to pay cash or take advantage of low-cost loans for solar ownership can still take advantage of current credits.

The 30% tax credit significantly lowers your total costs with thousands in savings—but only if your system is installed by the end of 2025.

Third-Party Ownership (TPO): For homeowners who prefer little to no upfront cost, TPO options like solar leases or power purchase agreements (PPAs) remain viable.

These options will still be viable after 2025, since third-party finance companies will remain eligible for tax credits under the new legislation and can pass those savings along to homeowners, even if homeowners themselves can’t claim the tax credit directly.

So while either path can help homeowners lower their bills and contribute to a cleaner energy future, the path to ownership is significantly more viable and valuable for homeowners who act now.

Our Perspective: The Future Is Bright

At Powur, we believe clean energy will continue to thrive in the years ahead and we are committed to remaining a critical part of America’s energy transition.

America’s growing energy needs, rising power costs, and the transition to sustainable solutions ensure that solar will play a central role in our energy future.

But in the short–term we remain laser focused on helpful homeowners who want to own their systems and claim the tax credit. Take action now. The window is closing fast.
