Why Did You Buy a Business?


It may sound like a pretty simple question, but believe it or not some people have no real clue as to the real reason for their business.

The standard throw away lines  of being financially independent, I want to be my own boss, I am  tired of chasing deadlines and KPI's are reasons people choose to buy a business but they aren't powerful enough to keep you there.

If it is to make more money (which most people desire) why is that so important.   Money keeps most people awake at night, with either how to keep it or how they don't have it.

If it is time freedom and the ability to select your hours, income and exploring the planet (again a good dream), when you start a new business the first 12 months, you are busy learning and building your business and finding your customers...you don't even have time for any lifestyle.

We all get fixated on what a business delivers if it works, rather than becoming a craftsman or professional of the process.

To be the craftsman or professional you need to have a why that ignites you everyday...

Why did you buy a business?

I am lucky I get to interview people everyday who are looking for business to buy. We use a simple script which asks questions of the potential buyer and some people can't or won't answer them (their choice)

 We ask an income question, which many people don't want to share their lofty dreams because we are taught not to speak about what we really want, incase we are judged.

When asked why they want a business, I don't listened to the external replayed responses I want the heart response like I received today for 8 people who qualified to see our business presentation...

  • I have been downside 4 times and I am never going through that experience again (definite decision)
  • I believe I am worth more than the small wage I receive each week (realisation of personal worth)
  • I have had itchy feet for while and am ready to commit to my dreams (commitment to oneself)
  • I am bored at being retired...I want a better purpose in my life then (coffee and drinks at 5.00)
  • I want to travel, for past 12 years travelling to work...doesn't do for me..(I am ready to change)
  • I have always loved personal development and now I can make a business out of it (dream )
  • Another year has flown by and I am sick of living broke.. (I will do what it takes to become wealthy)
  • I want to work and earn without boundaries of fixed addresses (it is my way of living life)
The great thing about interviewing people is you may get your next advertising campaign, because they are really personal reasons.  These are the reasons you need to discover.

We are about to shift home to another state in Australia...right up the top close to Darwin...do you know how it feels to make a decision when you have a business which fits into every circumstance or situation you need it too?

Now that is lifestyle balance...Why did you buy a business?
