How the subconscious controls behavior

The majority of people believe they are in control of their behavior because they consciously decide what they want to do. According to the teachings of Bob Proctor, however, the real driver of behavior is not the conscious mind at all. It is the subconscious mind. Understanding this distinction can completely transform the way you approach personal growth, success, and achieving your goals.

The conscious mind is the thinking mind. It is the part of you that analyzes, reasons, chooses, and sets goals. When you decide you want to earn more money, start a business, improve your health, or become more confident, that decision is made consciously. But here is the critical insight: the conscious mind only accounts for a very small percentage of your mental activity.

The subconscious mind, on the other hand, is the emotional mind and the storage center of your beliefs, habits, and conditioning. It operates automatically. According to Proctor, the subconscious mind controls approximately 95% of our behavior. That means most of what we do every day happens without conscious thought.

Think about your daily routines. The way you react to stress, the habits you repeat, the amount of money you feel comfortable earning, even how confident you feel in certain situations are all deeply influenced by subconscious programming. These patterns were developed over years through repetition, emotional experiences, and the influence of people around you.

This is why simply deciding to change something often does not work. You may consciously decide to be more productive, more confident, or more successful, but if your subconscious programming says otherwise, your behavior will eventually revert to the old pattern. The subconscious mind always expresses what it believes to be true.

Bob Proctor often explained this through the concept of paradigms. A paradigm is a collection of habits stored in the subconscious mind. These paradigms control how you act, what results you produce, and even what opportunities you notice.

The key to real transformation is not forcing behavior through willpower. Instead, it is reprogramming the subconscious mind with new beliefs and new emotional conditioning. Visualization, repetition, emotional involvement, and studying empowering ideas are powerful ways to begin shifting subconscious programming.

When you intentionally feed your mind with higher-level thinking and begin imagining yourself as the person who already has the results you desire, the subconscious mind slowly accepts this new image. As it does, your behavior naturally begins to align with it.

Instead of fighting yourself, you begin working in harmony with the deeper part of your mind. And that is where lasting change truly begins.
