Why I Choose Network Marketing!

For most of us in network marketing, when we were younger we never thought this would be the industry that we would be working in. When I was younger I always had dreams of being a singer and songwriter working in the music business. In my mind I saw myself making a lot of money traveling all over the world as a singer and songwriter. At the age of 13 years old I would study singers and songwriters like Babyface, Johnny Gill, Michael Jackson, and many more to learn how to write and structure a well written song. Singing in my church choir created an outlet for me to sing in front of people that was willing to listen. I also remember sitting at my parent’s kitchen table pretending to be a successful businessman negotiating multi-million dollar deals for my own record label. I was always intrigued by the music industry because if I could write a hit song, I could make an ongoing residual income called royalties off of each song I would write. Even though I am currently active within music at 39 years old, unfortunately, life did not work out the way I imagined. 

When I was younger, I made decisions in my life that always took me a step back instead of forward. Let’s just say I enjoyed learning the hard way in life. I remember straight out of high school I started working my first job at UPS. It was very hard work but it was a way for me to make money to buy studio equipment and pay for recording studio time. At that time in my life I had no responsibilities and I was chasing every pretty girl that came my way and lost sight of why I was working at UPS. After becoming a parent at a young age, my responsibilities changed and the decisions that I needed to make to support myself and my family financially had to change. I can honestly say over my 22+ years of working so many various jobs and making other people money, I was tired of being broke and I thought I had the ultimate solution. I decided to take courses to become a mortgage originator in 2006. When I enrolled in the course I was so nervous because I was never a great student in high school. Every chance I had I would study at work during my lunch break or at home when everyone was asleep and I had no distractions. As a result of my hard work and dedication I passed my mortgage training courses needed to become a mortgage professional. I landed a job as a mortgage originator pretty quickly because it was commission only and I had to find my own customers and finance my own marketing. My wife at the time was so nervous of the fact that I took on a commission based job because we had financial obligations but I was so certain that I would make big money.

Failure was something that I never expected as a mortgage originator. I spent so much money that my wife and I really did not have to pay for my mortgage training, business cards, yard signs, website, etc. I would contact real estate agents and they would tell me that they only worked with preferred mortgage companies. It was all about kickbacks back then before the laws in the mortgage industry changed. My goal at the time was to build a team of real estate agents that I could send and receive referrals from. Since I was just getting started it was very difficult to get rolling and then it happened. The real estate/mortgage industry started to crumbled in 2007. I could not even recoup the money that my wife and I invested to start my new career. I felt like such a failure. I had convinced my wife at the time that my plan to become a mortgage originator was guaranteed not to fail. The fact that I did not properly plan to build my business caused me to sink my family into financial disaster. At that point, I had put myself in a position that required me to work multiple jobs that I hated just to get my family financially out of the hole. My wife would complain constantly that I was not spend time with her but I was a slave to my employer and money.

During that awful time in my life I was working a full-time job that required me to work overtime six days a week and I delivered newspapers to residence 7 days a week for 4 to 5 hours before I would go to my full-time job and on weekends. I quickly realized that I needed to find something that would supplement my income that did not require me to dedicate so much of my time to make money. Its only 24 hours in a day and I was working 10 to 12 hours at my full-time job and 4 to 5 hours at my part-time job. That was a total of 17 hours per day working but that’s not including the total of 2 hours of driving needed for me to get back and forth to work and home. I still had to go home and be a father and husband and try to get sleep when I could and do it all over again the next day. With all that said and done I still could never get ahead financially once taxes was taken out of my little check, fuel cost I needed to get back and forth, and so much more just to look like I was living a normal life. It took a friend of mine to show me how I needed to change my mindset and leverage other people’s time to make money just like how my employers make their money leveraging their employees time. My friend and mentor taught me the true meaning of distribution and how it can make me a wealthy man.

My friend and mentor introduced me to my very first network marketing opportunity. I must admit that I thought it was a scam because it was too good to be true. He was making $100,000 per year with his network marketing business and he was also still working his full-time job making another $60,000 as a local truck driver. He explained that he sets up distribution channels when he recruit, train and develop a new enrolled associate into his business. He used Walmart as an example to help me understand what he meant by distribution channels. He said every time Walmart opens a new store in a new neighborhood they are creating another distribution channel that generates a new stream of income for their company. My mentor said that Walmart will recruit new people to work at their new facility and train and develop them to follow certain processes to ensure that they are productive for the purpose of making money for their company. He also proceeded to tell me that the process in which they recruit, train and develop their staff is duplicated and used in each and every store that they open to help ensure the profitability and success of every new distribution channel. When he explained this concept to me I fell in love with network marketing and felt more comfortable recruiting associates to my business.

When I decided to get into network marketing, my reasons for getting involved in it was very clear to me but not my friends and family. They would say that it was a pyramid scheme and I was wasting my time on a get rich quick scam. I learned quickly that you cannot win everyone over and get them to join the amazing opportunity that was just presented to you. You have to choose a specific target audience that you can relate to and show them how your products and services can help them personally or in their business. For example, maybe you offer credit repair and you are so excited about your opportunity but you are having a hard time recruiting new agents. The problem could be that you are trying to recruit everyone. In this type of business opportunity it would be beneficial to you to focus on recruiting people that work in the car sales, real estate sales, mortgage sales and consumer loans industry because they have easy access to individuals credit reports all day every day and when they a denied you can help those customers become credit worthy so they can qualify in the future with a lender. In my experience, stay away from recruiting family and friends if you truly value the relationship that you have with them. Ask yourself this, if you worked in HR for your employer would you write down your top 100 family and friends to recruit to work for your employer or would you target and call on potential applicants that fit your employers target audience?

In closing, I recommend that if you are seriously interest in being a successful entrepreneur and don’t have the resources to start a business:

• Consider joining a network marketing business that do not have an enrollment fee to be an associate or independent business owner of their company. After my experience spending money I did not really have to get into the mortgage industry it taught me to find opportunities that I can quickly become profitable.

• Also, remember that working two jobs is not always the solution to your money problems. The more you work for a W2 wage the more taxes you have to pay. Its only 24 hours in a day which means you are limited to how much you can make daily due to time constraints.

• Be realistic with yourself and realize that the only way to make an unlimited income is to start a business that will allow you to leverage other people’s time to make money when you are sleep. It is a wonderful feeling to have a team that works with you and they are following what was taught to them and you wake up to see that they made you money that you did not have to physically work for. You put in the work one time by teaching them how to implement certain processes that will generate sales for them and help recruit a new member to their team which will become a distribution channel that generates more money for your business.
