How much can I expect to make from this insurance business?

The key to starting up an insurance business is to manage your expectations. This is not a get-rich scheme that promises instant success while doing nothing. It is a 4 to 5-year commitment to build your own business from the ground up and ditch your boss forever. That takes hard work for at least 2 hours each evening.

The fact is you will not make much until you master the basics of consultative selling and the specific products you are matching to your client's needs. So keep your investment as small as possible (part-time) while you get your license and learn the ropes.

A big bang all-in approach will lead to a major disappointment and failure. Approximately 4 out of 5 new agents quit within the first 4 years. As such, manage your expectations and keep a tight rein on costs during this period. Do not give up your day job while you learn the ins and outs of insurance.

Once you get past the initial learning curve and testing period, things get a lot better as a result of referrals and residuals.

But it typically takes 4 to 5 years to build your reputation and a client base. After 4 to 5 years you should have sufficient referrals and residuals to earn more than 48k per annum.

What does it cost to get licensed by the state?

The cost to take a course by an accredited provider, take the state exam, apply for a state license and get fingerprinted for a background check is approximately $200 and takes about a month (about a week for each of the 4 steps above).

Once you are licensed, you will get Insurance companies to appoint you as a producer to sell their products. This requires you to start product training i.e. life insurance and annuity, or health insurance products from specific companies.

What does it cost to get mentored by me?

The cost to be mentored by me is that you have to promise to 'Pay It Forward' to at least 3 people that you know could work 2 hours part-time each evening to make some extra money while building their own business.

Once you are licensed you have to start helping to mentor at least 3 people through the process by sharing your knowledge and experiences with them. This is similar to sponsoring someone in a 12-step rehab program and will be just as rewarding for you.

It has been proven in numerous studies that the best way to learn is to teach someone else. Mentoring reinforces what you have learned and forces you to explain it in the simplest possible manner. Explaining it reinforces it in your own mind.

It doesn't matter to me whether the 3 people you mentor are friends, a spouse, or family members. The important part is to mentor 3 people.
