I Highly Encourage You to Become a Skeptic!
While most people view skepticism as a negativity, it is actually a very positive process, in its true meaning and origin. According to “Skeptoid” with Brian Dunning, “The popular misconception is that skeptics, or critical thinkers, are people who disbelieve things. And indeed, the common usage of the word skeptical supports this: ‘He was skeptical of the numbers in the spreadsheet’, meaning he doubted their validity. To be skeptical, therefore, is to be negative about things and doubt or disbelieve them.
The true meaning of the word skepticism has nothing to do with doubt, disbelief, or negativity. Skepticism is the process of applying reason and critical thinking to determine validity. It’s the process of finding a supported conclusion, not the justification of a preconceived conclusion.”
I’m sure we have all heard the statement, “If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.” This statement can serve both as a warning and as an inhibitor of our individual abilities of critical thinking if we allow it to. But there is a difference between being a Skeptic and being in denial. If presented with an offer, the very first thing we should do is ask the question, “How is this possible?” then follow up with our own due diligence and research the credible evidence to seek the rational grounds for belief.
However, what a lot of people do instead is give over their critical thinking power to someone else to make a decision for them. This happens when you just take someone’s word for something and worst of all, include everything that sounds “too good” in the blanket statement above, “If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is” without a second thought. There is one word in that statement that should cause one to pause and that is the word, “usually.” That means that this is not ALWAYS the case. And if they choose to continue to willfully doubt, even in the face of credible evidence to support the activity, this is not skepticism… this is called Denial.
