Are you RETAILING TO RECRUIT?

How are you enrolling new people into your business?

I was taught a long time ago by a network marketing legend that you should retail to recruit. Meaning, you should sell your product to new people and make them customers first before thinking about selling them on joining your business as a distributor.  However it seems like that method has fallen by the wayside.

Although my primary business is a high-ticket direct sales program, I am still heavily involved in a network marketing business that centers it's product around weight loss. To me, it just makes sense to develop retail customers first and then later attempt to bring them into your business as a distributor or IBO. Which is what I do.

How about you?

I remember reading somewhere that a majority of network marketers NEVER make any money in their businesses.   And that the majority of people who join an MLM company drop out within their first 90 days. I don't know if those things are really true or not, but I understand why it's said.

I've been in the network marketing arena over 10 years and I can admit I've made a lot of money with a few companies, and made very little, if any with the rest. And I believe that the number one reason why I didn't make much money with some was because there wasn't an emphasis on retailing the product. Therefore I didn't. The number one thing in all of those companies was stressing how to recruit people into the business.

What I have learned over the years is you MUST retail your product to recruit new people into your business. Think about it, a new person comes into your business all ready to make money and prove their family wrong about the opportunity. But they end up becoming discouraged because the people they've recruited don't do anything, so he/she makes nothing.   That first sale and the cash that goes with it is vital in the motivation of that distributor. The selling of the product puts cash in their pocket and it gives your new customers the opportunity to try out the product and to maybe like it so much that a light bulb flicks on in their head to say, "Hey, I like this product so much, I think I could probably sell it!"

Today, most network marketing company's force you to be on some sort of auto-ship of the product to be an active member, which I hate.  However, I see it as a necessary evil .  But despite the auto-ship our company's have in place, I still believe you should teach your people to develop ten customers first. Then you could teach your people to ask those customers who do they know that might be interested in making more money. If they're swift "upstairs" some of them may say, "ME!"   Of course that's not your intention, but it works!

So to wrap this up, I believe you should teach your people how to develop customers first and that way you can build yourself an organization that is solid and that will last. I mean after all, we all want to make money while we sleep right?
