How to Blend “Old School” & New School to Create Faster Results In Network Marketing.

Back in the day (ok it was the late 90’s), during my university days, my friend and I had decided to join a network marketing company (although at that time I never knew that’s what it was). So in order to recruit people back then, we did the only thing we can think of to build our business and that was going door to door and presenting people with the products. Needless to say we gave up quickly because, first off… …it was SO time consuming and second of all… approaching people who don’t even know you was not a good decision. Now fast forward 2 decades later and although with the advancements online, network marketers are still being taught these “old school” methods of recruiting. Just to be clear I am NOT saying that these tactics don’t work, in fact people have built their business based on these methods, but personally nowadays leveraging technology makes things so much easier. So let’s talk about… How to Blend “Old School” With “New School” Before I dive in, here are some things you may have been told by your company or upline to recruit people: Create a list of 100 people Talk to family and friends The fortune is in the follow up Prospect everyone within 3 feet It’s NOT selling it’s sharing Give home presentations Hit people up at the mall Now I can go on and on but you get the idea. These are all “old-school”, traditional, belly-to-belly ways to market. What’s funny is that there are a lot of similarities here to how you should build your business online. Let’s look at them…


The “3 Foot Rule”

Traditionally the “3 Foot Rule” in network marketing is to talk to anyone within “3 feet” of you in the hopes of recruiting them. The Online “3 Foot Rule” is essentially talking to anyone within “3 feet” of you online. No matter the social media platform, if someone connects with you, you should reach out and start networking. For instance, on Facebook you could send a personal message to anyone who… Sends you a friend request Likes or shares one of your posts Comments on a post or an ad (more on this in a moment) Ask them about their business and goals and see if you can determine what they’re struggling with. Make a “List of 100” Traditionally you would make a list of 100 people you know and then prospect them. The online version of this is simple especially if you are using Facebook to advertise. Facebook’s advertising platform has a feature where you can target people who are highly likely to be interested in your business or opportunity. You can make a list of targeted “interest groups” highly likely to respond to your offer. For example if you are in the weight loss niche you can target people who follow “Weight Watchers”. So instead of making a list of 100 family and friends (who aren’t very targeted), make a list of interest groups , and now you’re actually talking to people who are interested. The Follow Up There are many forms follow-up can take online, and many of them are completely automated! You can follow up by: Messaging on social media Broadcasting a Facebook Live Email Providing content on your blog There are so many ways to follow up and it’s not just limited to phone calls. But the important thing to remember is that you still need to talk to people online or offline. Whether you are building your business the “old school” or “new school” way it still requires work. One of the benefits of leveraging the internet is it really makes things easier, you can reach more people and it’s less time consuming.
