Do's and Don'ts of Barter and Trade (PART 1)

Do's and Don'ts of Barter and Trade (PART 1)

Our fiat currency is a very effective medium of exchange because it is generic. It is not eaten, processed or used up except in its use by being spent to buy any goods or service we require provided we have enough money to exchange for it. We do not need to worry about whether we have a use for the money when we receive it, we need only know that we can use it to obtain what we want once we have enough money.

Barter and trade exchange have been around since the beginnings of humanity. There is no reason to think that will change any time soon. But bartering for products and services is far different from our present currency exchange systems and requires a very different understanding of how markets work to be successful. It should not be thought of as just the same as using dollars or other paper currency.

Barter dates back to the dawn of time yet it is no longer part of our day-to-day existence here in the USA. Many 3rd world countries still maintain a system of barter within the poorer elements of society but overall it only exists on TV shows like "The walking dead".

Until very recently within the last four to five generations, barter and independent trade was still used in this country. Without it, many families could not have survived and the west would never have been opened.

Like it or not, the inevitable; financial collapse of the mainstream system ALWAYS leads to secondary markets. In the face of a failing dollar, erratic investment markets, and unsustainable national debts, individual barter and other economic methods will be making a return very soon.

So how can you barter in safety and know that you will survive? To start with, there are some simple and basic rules to follow. You can find volumes, both factual and fiction on the use of barter in poorer and post apocalyptic scenarios, and most of them assume that barter will be the norm (think Roadwarrior movies) but none of these describe the true dangers or difficulties of using barter for daily or common needs.

I am talking about bartering when your very life may depend on your bartering skills and approach, when what you offer could lead not to a fair trade but a robbery or even your death.

Most people think bartering is simply a case of "I’ll give you this and you give me that that" and everyone walks away happy ... the truth is much more complex and it is not that simple.

Let me explain, say you have 22 ammo to trade for goods... how many shells is a gallon of milk worth and what if the milk owner needs 45s not 22s... now what do you do? How do you trade ammo that the other person does not need for milk that you do need?

Lets say you are the dairy farmer and do not need the 22 rounds being offered, will you accept them anyways and trade them off to another neighbor who does have a use for the ammo, for his venison?
