How To Transform Your Life

To the dismay of commuters, commutes are getting longer and often more tedious. Time lost every day adds up and usually amounts to a bigger chunk of life than many people realize. To make it worse, 25% of commuters in the UK experience transport delays and, there is no need for me to go on about increased costs of fuel and public transport.

This has challenging effects on personal well-being and has implications for society as a whole.

According to research, the average daily commute in The UK is one hour. European countries and The US are very slightly less on average.

If your working life is 50 years, at today's prices you will spend £126,000 (140,000 €) on your lifetime commute. Enough to buy a 95m2 house in France, Bali, or . . . Sadly though, most commuters will never achieve the financial freedom to do that. A veterinary student told me recently that she has no option but to live a "commute" away from her university and the cost of that in travel alone is £800 per academic year. Quite a hefty sum for somebody already on a low income.

The UK Office for National Statistics found that "commuters have lower life satisfaction, a lower sense that their daily activities are worthwhile, lower levels of happiness and higher anxiety on average than non-commuters".

My commute is zero although I do get to travel with my business, and I can take my family. Instead of a daily commute, I enjoy a daily mountain bike ride on a route of my choice or, I ski in the winter when the slopes are quiet and most people are busy at their corporate careers. I never miss a family event or cancel at the last minute. Life always comes first, and I achieve successful results in my business consistently.
