Independent Travel Agent FAQs Number 1 - How will I get customers?

It’s a common question.  People are ready to sign up for this business opportunity and then they stop and panic and ask themselves how they will get customers.   They ask themselves why people will book with them and how will people even get to know about them.  

So let’s start with some Travel Industry facts..... firstly it’s the biggest Industry in the world and everyone does it.   Did you know that 1 in every 10 jobs in the world is supported by tourism?   That equates to 9.9% of the global workforce is working in a job supported by tourism.  Wow!   Tourism is worth $7.6 trillion to the global economy.   These are massive figures and one reason why if you join the Industry and work at it you will succeed.    

So where do you get those customers from?   The answer is anywhere.....literally everyone is doing it.   Look at this list..... is there anything on it that you have done in the last 12 months?  

Theme Park, Zoo, flight, train, hotel, motel, camping, airport parking, car hire, airport transfers, travel insurance, theatre tickets, concert tickets, excursions overseas, day trips, a cruise.    You could have earned commission or gotten a travel agent only deal on all of them.  

So...who are your customers...... you, your family and friends.   Do you work?  Your colleagues or your company. Any groups you belong to...a choir, a church, golf club, after school activities like scouts and guides all of them are potential customers.     

Are you a hairdresser..... everytime you say to a client....”are you going away this year?”  You could be offering to book their holiday.  Are you a nail technician...... you could be booking their holidays.   Are you a college teacher.....all those students and all your colleagues are potential clients.   Oh but i’m a stay  at home Mum....great.... Mum & Baby groups .....they are all potential clients - you could even specialise in travelling with small children.    Do you already sell make up, plastic storage baskets, oils, candles..... all of your existing clients will also be booking holidays...you have already built the relationship.    All of those people could be adding to your income.  

A post on Facebook announcing your new business, leaflets, talk to people.....once the word is out they will come.   Maybe not thousands in a stampede but they will come, you will make bookings and when they have travelled they will talk and they will tell people that you got them a great deal and gradually you will have new people approaching you and asking for quotations.   

It takes time it’s not a get rich quick scheme it’s a business.  Some people are lucky and will have an Uncle who wants to book a $20,000 cruise the day you start, others will have to be more patient.  But facts.....everyone does it, everyone likes to know they got the best deal - the time is now......
