Looking For An Opportunity? What Works For You?

So often when we look for an opportunity, we immediately start to look for what's available to us.  Well, that is literally any and everything, so we could be looking at new opportunities for hours, weeks, months, or even years!  The better way to look at an opportunity is to determine what works for you. Below are some questions that may help you to determine what works for you:

  • What are your interests?
  • What skills are you good at?
  • Which skills would you like to hone?
  • How much time are you willing to invest in the new opportunity (as opposed to being told how much of your time you will need to invest)?
  • Where would you like to work on the opportunity--office, home, anywhere?
  • How much money are you willing to invest in the opportunity?
  • What are your expected returns?
  • What is the flexibility of the opportunity?
  • Where would you like the location of the opportunity to be or does it matter?

Looking at what you want as opposed to what's available to you will narrow down your endless list of possibilities into a manageable list of probabilities that you can readily choose from.  If something doesn't fit with what works for you, then you can disregard it as a probable opportunity.  On to the next!

Brenda, 41, had had her fair share of opportunities in her life and now she was looking for a new one.  She knew she wanted to be in a helping profession and that she wanted to get paid handsomely, something that she had yet to have in her life.  She also knew that she wanted the flexibility of working from home and making her own schedule, as she had a critical illness and kids to take care of.  She was open to many things, including things she had absolutely refused to do in the past.  But she was clear on the fact that she would need to be able to work from home .  That was a must.  She also knew that many successful millionaires were salespeople, so she decided she finally wanted to learn how to sell successfully.

Armed with that knowledge, Brenda searched for an opportunity to fit what worked for her and happened on the opportunity of insurance, although she had turned down the idea of that opportunity in the past.  So she went online and put her resume out there.  She was approached by a company that coincided with her values and wants and decided to try it.  She found that not only would the company teach her what she needed to know, but it encouraged her to develop herself, her total self, even when it had seemingly nothing to do with her vocation, allowing her to become a better person overall.   It would also allow her to earn an unlimited amount of money and work from anywhere she chose.

As you can see from Brenda's experience, self reflection leads to a better fit.  The more you know about what you want from an opportunity, the more you can figure out if an opportunity is a good fit for you before you waste precious time and/or money with it.  Doing some soul searching beforehand may just help you to be more successful in the long run in whatever opportunity you choose to join.
