Passive income and the harsh reality I just recently celebrated a mile stone birthday my 50th, yes half a century had snuck up on me and arrived. But I was ok I have a nice house a couple of investment property’s life was on track or so I thought. That very same month I was made redundant from my well-paying job in the finance industry. In fact, the whole business shut down our 9% ROI was not enough for the greedy shareholders we were all told. At the time I thought I would just roll into the next job and all would be fine… The harsh reality was that job was NOT just around the corner. This brings me to the subject matter on hand today. Passive income. No doubt you will have been told just like I have that you need to diversify your share portfolio or don’t hold your investment properties in the same suburb. You need to spread your risk! But many of us do not head this advice when it comes to our primary income, the job stops and so does all of our income. Plus, to make matters worse if this drags on your super contributions begin to suffer too. An old friend once told me look at life as a one metre ruler and you will see how far along that ruler you are. So here I was at 50 a fair way along the ruler of life and my passive income had amounted to the grand sum of zero. I had left school at the age of 16 so my working life was now 34 years old and fully reliant on that well-paying job that I really had no control over. OK, I did find a job but I knew that from this time on I also needed a plan B and this plan B had to tick some critical boxes for me. Box one, it did not suck up too much of my time. My day job already did that for me. I no longer wanted to trade time for money any more, 34 years was enough. Box two, the principal of leverage needed to be in play, very important that this principal is fully understood in order for an income to become passive. Box three, it had to be fun and interesting to me. After all I do work in finance… So my journey into this subject is still in its infancy but I am already on the path and really there is no going back now, I am too far along that ruler to wait any longer. It’s now or never. It would be great to here from any readers of this article who have come to a similar realization and or want to share their story or even here a bit more about my plan B.
